If you’re feeling stuck on how to organize your thoughts or how to keep track of all of your characters’ appearances, locations, etc. in your book, look no further than yWriter6. It’s a free program by Spacejock Software (www.spacejock.com/yWriter6.html) that is geared toward writers.
Sometimes, I find it difficult to remember exactly the length of hair or colour of eyes of a character in a novel if they don’t appear often. And for one, I don’t tend to write the detail of eye colour more than once in a book. I think it becomes overkill. I also find it hard to remember what side of the living room the small, ornate reading lamp was on. These are important things to remember.
Enter: yWriter6, the software that helps keep these details organized in a concise and easy to access fashion. The software allows you to create chapters with detailed chapter summaries. You can also create individual scenes if you wanted.
The most useful part of the tool, for me, is the area where I can describe all of the locations that may appear more than once. This also applies to descriptions of characters’ appearances. It may not seem like the kind of thing you want to worry about, but while writing Life at the Death House, I certainly benefited from having a record of hair and eye colour, etc.
I don’t use this software as a word processor, but as an idea collector and holder. It helps me keep organized.
If you are writing a book, submitting to magazines or querying your book, check out yWriter6 and Sonar3. These programs will change your life. Any organizational stress you may have been feeling will wash away in no time.
