I love discovering new words. I am attuned to them when people speak and when I read. I find that in literary fiction, authors tend to use such beautiful language that I feel almost intimidated to say that I write in the same genre. But I intend on changing that feeling because I intend on learning three new words per week that I can one day use in my own writing.
Places that I commonly learn new words: books, literary magazines, Scrabble games with my husband, listening to my boss at work (he has a great vocabulary, in fact one of the words for today is from him), and my co-worker, Cassandra’s, “Word of the Day” calendar.
Welcome to Wordy Wednesday, the day of new words and attempts at proper use in sentences.
- Halfpace: A platform on which the stair turns back in exactly the reverse direction of the lower flight of the staircase.
- Effusive: expressing feelings of gratitude, pleasure, or approval in an unrestrained or heartfelt manner.
- Adelphogamy: Marriage in which brothers share a wife. Marriage between a brother and sister.
# 1) Halfpace (from Cassandra’s “Word of the Day” calendar)
There were so many stairs in the bloody building that we had to stop to catch our breath on the halfpace between the fourteenth and fifteenth floors.
# 2) Effusive (from my boss during a team meeting)
Shirley came bursting into the room, beaming with effusive praise for everyone in the room. She had finally received her acceptance letter.
# 3) Adelphogamy (from Cassandra’s “Word of the Day” calendar)
“Oh, those Smith brothers,” Lillie said, mocking a shiver as she glanced over at the tall, dark and mysterious men. They came into town every day from their farm out on the fifth concession to buy groceries for their family. Everyone in town knew that they had a marriage of adelphogamy: they shared the same wife.
“Do you think they all sleep in the same bed?” Minnie asked.
Lillie giggled. “Who knows? Poor girl must be busy.” She winked.
These are my attempts at words. How would you use them in a sentence or a scene? Comment with your ideas below!
