I have read a number of articles lately where authors recommend that writers should attempt to write in more than one genre to keep things interesting. I like this idea, and I spent a bit of time reflecting on it the other day.
The scene was this: I was driving home from visiting a friend at around twilight. The snow was coming down heavily as I drove around the windy, snow covered back roads with trees lining each side. I decided in that moment that a character could be driving up the same roads, heading toward a new life. The story would be a mystery.
I didn’t have the details in that moment, but the feeling that I had as the darkness started to surround the truck and the snow limited my visibility was incredible and inspiring. I got home and later that night, I wrote, by hand, several pages of an idea. It’s creepy, mysterious and totally different from my typical genre.
It’s going to be fun seeing it all comes to life.
